My HomeLab Journey & Tips to Start Your Homelab Journey

I have been experimenting and using a Homelab in one shape or another for over 6 years now. I started using a raspberry pi 4 for a simple pi hole to now running a couple machines (One VPS & another physical hardware) and have gone through and ran head first into multiple roadblocks.

Some Quick Tips on what to do (And not!)

  • As stated above, Homelabs can be all shapes and sizes. Dont feel like you need a full on rack mounted server to make things work. A low powered Mini PC may be fine for your needs.
  • Do make sure that you have fun. Dont be afraid to walk away for awhile to reassess your approach.
  • Consider your security posture when deploying applications. Not every application needs to be touching the public facing internet. And if there is an admin console that is exposed to the internet you can almost guarantee that a bot will attempt to bruteforce the login at some point in time.
  • If you dont have room to build your own, Consider investing in a Virtual Private Server. There are plenty of services out there such as OVH, Digital Ocean and Hostinger just to name a few. Just look for one that gives you the best bang for your book.
